Conditions Treated
LOWER BACK PAIN
Spinal nerve root compression, injury to the intervertebral discs, a pulled or torn ligament and soft tissue injuries could cause lower back pain. Treatment can be surgical or non-invasive, depending on the cause of the pain.
SPINAL CORD INFECTIONS
Fungal, viral or bacterial infections can enter the bloodstream and travel to the spine. Types of spinal infections include Vertebral osteomyelitis, discitis and epidural abscess.
NECK, SHOULDER AND BACK PAIN
Pain in the neck, shoulder and back can occur due to spinal fractures, overuse, strenuous exercise, weightlifting, disc degeneration, disc herniation, arthritis, infection or traumatic injuries.
DEGENERATE SPINAL DISC DISEASE
Unlike other bodily tissues that receive a regular supply of blood, spinal discs have a low supply of blood, so once the disc is damaged, it cannot repair on its own.
HERNIATED SPINAL DISC DISEASE
Spinal disc herniation arises due to wear and tear over time as a result of age. As a result, the disc loses its flexibility, which increases the risk of it rupturing after a minor strain or a sudden twist.
SPINAL CORD STENOSIS
Spinal stenosis arises when the space in the spinal canal decreases, resulting in pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
SPINAL CORD TUMOURS
Spinal cord tumours are large tissue masses that grow within the spinal cord or surrounding tissue.
SPINAL CORD TRAUMA
Spinal cord trauma occurs due to a direct blow to the spine due to a sudden injury, motor vehicle accident or assault.
SCIATICA
Sciatica is pain that arises from irritation to the sciatic nerve due to spinal stenosis and the presence of bone spurs or herniated discs pinching on the nerve.
Surgical Procedures
SPINAL CORD FUSION
Spinal cord fusions using screws, plates, cages, hooks, and rods are performed to strengthen the spine's stability by fusing two or more vertebrae. Dr Bomela performs fusions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
DISCECTOMY
A discectomy is a surgical procedure to cut out a damaged disc from the spine to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves
CORPECTOMIES
A corpectomy is the surgical resection of the vertebral body, the front portion of the vertebrae. However, the piece that engulfs the spinal cord is left intact. Instead, a bone graft helps fill the open space.
LAMINECTOMIES
A laminectomy aims to create room in the spinal canal by resecting bone spurs or other bodily tissues linked to spinal arthritis.
PAIN PROCEDURES
Rhizotomies and facet block injections are medical means to relieve lower back pain.
FAQ
Does a consultation with a spine surgeon mean that I need spine surgery?
One consultation does not necessarily mean you will need surgery. Instead, conservative means such as pain relief corticosteroid shots can achieve a better quality of life.
